Using Technology Responsibly

Many mom blogs warn of the dangers of the internet. Some moms don’t even allow their children to have iPads. I think a healthy balance is needed like many things in life. The internet is not something that you can just run away from. Instead, you could teach your children how to use it responsibly. Using technology is necessary for school and society. The topic of technology will always be relevant especially with the latest net neutrality issue.

Lead By Example

When was the last time you zoned out on the couch clicking on your tablet? Or use your phone to text message spyYour kids are watching how you use technology. Make sure that you are showing a good example of how to use it the right way. Put your phone away while you’re driving. Since they will watching you do that. Also, try to keep your phone away during family dinner. This allows you to have a real conversation and enjoy the moment.

Limit Binge-Watching

It’s not healthy for anyone to spend nine hours watching TV at a time. If you want to watch a series with your kids on a streaming service like Hulu set up a regular viewing time. Watch one or two episodes a day and take a break. Then save other episodes for the next scheduled viewing time. They will get excited about the show, and you will be happy that they aren’t spending all day in front of a TV.

Have Them Play Outside

Give your kids some downtime. Let them enjoy getting fresh air and being out in nature. Children benefit from being able to sit quietly and do nothing. That’s how they recharge, tablets and video games can raise their stress. Children also develop their imaginations when they have time to sit and think. Encourage them to take some downtime each day that isn’t spent using technology.  If you enjoyed this, check out my last post about my favorite TV shows.
